The Mama Backpack

I have had this bag on my list of "things to sew" for quite awhile now. The local fabric store had a fabulous sale on duck cloth so I bought up a good amount of yardage in different patterns. This fabric had my name written all over it though. The tutorial for the bag is here.
I wouldn't attempt this if I were a novice with the sewing machine, unless a good friend who sews is available. All in all a relatively simple bag to make and I think it will be a good bag for the beach days I am planning. I did add an inside pocket with a touch of velcro.
A couple of places I found the tutorial could have been written better were for the casing, the threading of the cord and I would also make the tabs for the grommets less thick if your using a thick fabric like I did. A regular cotton should be fine, but I wanted a sturdier bag. I do like backpacks with a bottom piece and this one has a quilted one for sturdiness, but it is a tad bit challenging to get the bottom to be "pucker free".
I think I am going to design a childs backback using the duck cloth I got, some of the designs are super cute! Note to self: add a flap with metal enclosure for the top of the bag and fabric straps.
Enjoy your weekend, and how bout slipping a little stitching in somewhere.

  1. What a fun bag! Hope you get lots of beach time.

  2. Really cute - you'll be the sassiest mama at the beach!

The kids' backpacks will be darling!

  3. And when will you be listing these for sale? :-)
Hint, I like reds, blues and chickens!
