Yarn Along

Joining in with Ginny of Small Things today for her weekly yarn along.  On the needles are a few projects I am working on for Christmas gifts. In the picture is a funky scarf I am loving as it is really a mindless knit which means one I can take anywhere and get a few rows in without alot of concentration. The yarn is a netting and you knit into the edge of the netting and it gives the circular finish. My daughter Jill is going to love this, if I don't keep it for myself :-)

Currently not reading anything too heavy as there isn't alot of time in my busy home school days. We are still findng a workable rhythm to our new school year and the days are a bit long with school work right now.  I did start a new morning quiet time devotional that our church uses and thus the teens use it too. My husband and I get a book and that way we can do a family Bible time at night and we're all on the same page, literally.  I am, however, reading snippets here and there of Pocketful of Pinecones by Karen Andreola. The yahoo group I run,  Observing Nature with Charlotte Mason,{ won't you join us?} is using this book for a nature study this Autumn season.

*Karen Andreola's interview and giveaway are right below this post! Do take a minute to read her words of wisdom and be blessed. Plus, leave a comment and you get a chance to win one of her lovely books!

And I must admit to doing quite a bit of baking. During Autumn all the comfort food recipes make their appearance and baking delicious apple desserts are on the menu.  Baking and reading run neck in neck and usually baking wins out because it blesses my family.

What are you reading, knitting or baking these days?

  1. I'm on the Christmas scarf push too - feels good to get a few handmade gifts under my belt at this time of year. The construction of your scarf looks really clever. And I'm 100% with you on the apple puddings! Even though I live in the tropics just now, part of my psyche is still hardwired for the UK and last night that meant baked apple sponge pudding, hmmmmm!

  2. Ooh - so the recipe Suzanne - eek! A bit made up, but very simple! It's my store-cupboard go-to pudding with only 5 minutes effort. (But I've never written it down before!)

    1. Lightly grease a lasagne dish (about 25cmx12cm ish) and preheat oven to 190C.

    2. Peel and cube 3 apples, sprinkle with a tsp of cinnamon, and a pinch each of ginger, nutmeg and allspice. Microwave on high for about 4 minutes to soften.

    3. Put:
    half a cup melted butter
    1 cup sugar
    1 cup flour
    2 tsp baking powder
    1 cup milk
into your lasagne dish, and smoosh it all together with the back of a fork until smooth.

Pour the apples over the top, bung it in the oven for 30 minutes, and enjoy!

  3. That scarf looks great. That yarn confused me so much when I first saw it, but I used a similar one for a ruffle scarf and now that I get it, it's a brilliant idea ;)

  4. Sounds like a lovely fall rhythm to me! I adore fall more than summer because of how wonderful the cool nights and warm days feel against each other! Enjoy this time between!

  5. Suzanne,

I love your scarf! So very pretty. I am not knitting right now, but I am cross-stitching. ;o) And I am reading back issues of The Parents' Review by Karen Andreola, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and English Roses by David Austin. ;o) My daughter (19) has been doing the baking and she has been working her way through Artisan breads in 5 minutes a day. YUM!!

  9. It's Molassas Cookies around here! Oh, they smell wonderful while mixing. They smell wonderful while baking. They smell wonderful while cooling. They smell wonderful while they are being eaten. Delicious. And a bit on the dangerous side if your waistbands happen to be a bit snug...

I'm knitting a cranberry colored Tea Leaves Cardigan. I'm working on the second sleeve. This has been a fun project.

Apples... We have a trees worth to get through (all cookers too). So apple pie, apple crumble, apple cake, apple chutney, apple butter, apple jelly... I do like autumn, but do get fed up of peeling and coring apples!!
