Happy St. Nicholas Day!

Today we celebrate St. Nicholas Day! Did you put your shoes under the tree or outside your door? It's not too late you know.

In our day and age with so much "me" centered teaching, it is nice to reflect and learn about others who gave their lives for their faith and ministered to the poor. St. Nicholas was one such man. I do not teach my children he has any powers or is a spirit that walks the earth.  During this season we will read from Foxe's Voices of the Martyrs  and reflect upon others who gave their lives for their faith.  Old St. Nicholas is probably the closest thing we get to Santa.

We will enjoy a tea time and eggnog with our traditional Dundee Cake. Tasha Tudor celebrated St. Nicholas Day with Dundee cake and we have enjoyed it also. This post is from a previous celebration where you can get a look at slices of dundee cake. It is not the traditional English fruitcake, this is a Scottish receipt, hence the difference. I shall also open my Take Peace exchange at teatime. Each year our Tasha Tudor group does an ornament exchange to be opened on this day--so much fun!

I hope you'll enjoy a little celebration today with your loves!

  1. I nearly missed it! Thanks for the reminder! We have rain rain rain. St. Nick would be very wet if he came today! LOL

    Enjoy and Take Joy!

  2. My husband gave me a little St. Nick doll this morning even though he didn't realize it was St. Nicholas Day (we give each other a small, inexpensive gift each day for the 24 days of Advent). A very appropriate gift considering the day. :o)

Thanks for the post and the links. It's so important to get away from the glitz and commercialism of Christmas and understand the real meaning to why we celebrate.

Oh, and the Take Peace group looks interesting. It sounds like a place I'd enjoy chatting. Are you taking new members?

  5. Happy St. Nicholas day to you too!

This day always reminds me of a dear friend and herbalist Betsy Williams of Andover, Massachusetts. She loves St. Nick and teaches and tells wonderful stories of him and his works.

    Joys!

Thanks for stopping by Blueberry Cottage and saying hello. I hope you found your time here an encouragement and blessing. I read all my comments and answer your questions right within.

I really detest word verification, but I had to enable it. The spam was overwhelming! Sorry if this deters you from commenting, but it was necessary.

Have a blessed day!
